William C. Alt

The subject of this biography was born in Germany, February 15, 1838. He landed in New York City in 1852, and remained there three years, when he removed to New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he lived seven years. He afterwards resided in Newark in the same state, until 1868, when he came to California, via Panama, arriving in San Francisco September 28th of the same year. He remained in San Francisco until the following March, when he came to San Mateo where he has since lived, following the trade of shoemaking, which he learned while a resident of New York City.
