OBITUARY ---------------MRS. MARY E. GILBERT
Redwood City Standard
June 3, 1926
Redwood City lost another of its pioneer residents last week when Mrs. Mary Gilbert passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elia Leary at 211 Bradford Street, Thursday morning. Death followed an illness of over a year. Born in Ohio 71 years ago, the deceased came to California at a very young age settling in San Mateo County. She married Frank Gilbert, pioneer farmer and milkman who passed away several years ago. One of Mrs. Leary’s cherished memories was her meeting President Lincoln. She was eight years old at the time and had been chosen to sing the Star Spangled Banner at a fourth of July celebration in Indiana, with her parents at the time. Lincoln with General Sheridan and other notables occupied seats on the platform when Mary, the little girl came to the platfòrm to perform. The President picked her up and carried her to her seat and then held her on his knee while she rendered the song. When she finished he affectionately kissed her and handed her back to her parents.
Mrs. Gilbert in addition to her daughter, leaves two sons, Horace, residing in Merced and Allison, a contractor in Los Angeles, also seven grandchildren.
Rev. C.A. Parker of the Baptist Church, and an old friend, conducted the funeral services from James Crowe Company. Interment in Union Cemetery.
