OBITUARY ---------------HERMAN AMBROSE SCOFIELD
Herman Ambrose Scofield was born in Vermont, Nov. 25, 1819. He came to California in the spring of 1850, first as a miner in Placer County, then as a budding attorney in Folsom. He came to Redwood City in 1859 and opened an office on the northwest corner of Broadway and Hamilton, next door to the printing establishment in the new building erected by James W. Turner for the Odd Fellows.
The downstairs part was fixed up for job printing and the teams of David Downer and Charles Nelson Fox ran the Newspaper. On Dec 26, 1864, Charles Fox transferred his interests to his brother George W Fox.
On January 1, 1868, the San Mateo Gazette had new owners, Herman A. Scofield and Albert T Warren. In 1868, Warren and Scofield bought the I00F building and the offices were moved upstairs (printing).
Scofied had been elected District Attorney, 1863-1865. After July 1871, he sold the “San Mateo County Gazette” and had law offices in San Francisco and Oakland, then returned to Redwood City in 1875. He died here January 13, 1881.
