OBITUARY ---------------ELMER JAMES SHERMANTINE
Redwood City Democrat
January 16, 1908
Death is a sad visitation at all times, even when it takes away the aged whose allotted years have been granted, but when it comes to claim the youth at the very thresh hold of life, in the happiest period of existence, it is inexpressibly sad. Last Friday. Elmer James Shermantine, the youngest son of John Shermantine of this city, passed away at Oakland after a brief illness of typhoid fever. The young man, while a native of Santa Clara County, spent the greater portion of his life in this city. He graduated from the grammar school and entered the high school, but after two years work in that institution, he gave up his studies to enter the employ of the United Gas and Electric Company and for the past two years has been one of the faithful workers for the corporation.
His body was brought to this city Monday for interment. At the depot, it was met by many of the former schoolmates of the deceased, accompanied by a delegation from the Rebeccah Lodge and escorted to the Congregational Church where services were conducted by Rev. C.C. Kirkland. The burial took place at Union Cemetery. Elmer Shermantine is spoken of his friends and former schoolmates as a bright young man whose lovable character endured him to all, He was industrious, attentive to his work and commanded the respect of his employers. The deceased was 21 years and 8 months. Besides his father, he leaves two brothers, Howard and Harry, and a sister, Alice, to mourn his loss, The surviving relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
