Charlie has gone to rest,

He was one of Redwood City’s oldest residents.

Charles Ackerstrom, one of the old-time residents, passed away sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday night in his cabin at the rear of Germania Hall. The deceased had been in failing health for months and unable to earn his living. He was too proud to ask for charity, and with his declining strength strove to give some return for kindness’ that were shown him. It had been his custom for sometime to call each afternoon at the saloon of Herman Anderson where he would be given food and such other nourishment as he required. He was on hand as usual Sunday but failed to appear Monday and after closing his place that night, Mr. Anderson made an investigation and found the old man lying on his bed dead. His body was taken in charge by Mr. Crowe and yesterday was buried in Union Cemetery. In accordance with directions given by the Scandinavian Society of San Francisco, of which the deceased was a member, he was given a fitting funeral. Rev. C.C. Kirkland conducted services at the grave. A number of friends attended.

Charles Ackerstrom’s true name was Johan Gustaf Ackerstrom. He was a native of Sweden, aged 66 years. The deceased was best known by the unkind appellation of “Crazy Charlie”. He had lived in Redwood City for 35 years and until recently had followed the occupation of wood piler. He was a harmless, honest and industrious man.
